Many colleges require two or three recommendation letters from people who are familiar with you. Someone qualified to describe your abilities, accomplishments, and personality should write these letters.

Recommendations are valued by colleges because they: Show aspects of yourself that grades and test results can't, Give your judgments on your personality, and who can you count on to speak for you?

Letters of recommendation are most effective when they cast you in the most favorable light and highlight your qualifications.

When to Ask for Recommendations

Remember to offer your references at least a month's notice before the earliest date you have for writing and sending your letters. The better time to ask is sooner. During the summer, many teachers like writing recommendations. Asking for recommendations by the beginning of your senior year or earlier is very necessary if you apply under the early decision or early action programs. It's important to keep in mind that some teachers will be drafting lengthy letters, which takes time. If your teachers don't have to rush, they'll do a better job editing your letter.

Who Should I Ask?

Finding people to write recommendation letters for you is your responsibility. To start the procedure, adhere to these steps:

  • All of your college applications should be thoroughly read. Schools frequently request letters of reference from academic instructors, sometimes in the context of a particular subject, from school counselors, or both.
  • Consult a counselor, your professors, and your family to find out who they would recommend.
  • Select a current teacher who has worked with you before or one of your junior-year teachers. A teacher from a few years ago is not the ideal recommendation because colleges want to see you from a current perspective.
  • Ask a teacher who is familiar with you outside of the classroom. A teacher who oversaw your performance in a play or gave advice to your debate club, for instance, might be a fantastic reference.
  • Think about other adults who are knowledgeable about you and your talents, such as a coach, an employer, or an adviser from an extracurricular activity.
  • The most crucial thing to remember is to choose someone who will be excited to write the letter for you.
  • If you're hesitant about whether to ask someone in particular, gently inquire as to whether they feel confident endorsing you. Avoid weak letters, doing that is a good idea.

How to get good Recommendations

Each year, some teachers submit numerous letters of recommendation. It's a good idea to spend some time talking with them, even if they are people you are familiar with. By jogging their memory, you may make it simple for them to provide positive, thorough information about your accomplishments and your prospects.

This is how:

  • Tell them about your class participation.
  • Remind them of certain accomplishments or initiatives you are proud of.
  • Inform them of your classroom learning.
  • Describe any obstacles you overcome.
  • Give them the details they require to give precise examples of your work.
  • If a counselor or other school representative must write a recommendation letter for you, abide by these rules:
    • Schedule a meeting in advance.
    • Talk about your achievements, interests, and aspirations for the future and college.
    • If there is anything on your transcript that needs to be addressed, like poor marks from your sophomore year, do it. Discuss how you changed and got better since then and why you had trouble.

You might wish to give them a CV that quickly describes your activities inside and outside of the classroom as well as your objectives when you speak with instructors, counselors, or other references
