Why is time management important?

We all have heard how important time management is and why we should have it yet we don't know how it can help us excel in our goals. Having good time management early in your life can help benefit you in the upcoming years of your life. So here are a few ideas that can help you manage your time wisely in high school.

Keep and build a calendar

One of the first steps towards gaining the ability to manage time is to have a schedule where you can plan and write down your annual, monthly, and weekly commitments and goals. The best way to start is to take a calendar( Use IOS Calendar, Google Calendar, or a physical calendar) and enter all your major school commitments, from tests, assignments, presentations, etc. It will give you a broader insight into ways to help organize and schedule your work. After inputting the most important dates, you also need to enter due dates, and goals and stick to them. This approach has proven to be quite helpful for those who have a good amount of work to handle in a short amount of time.

So the first step, a list of homework you have arranged from what's due in the shortest amount of time to the longest amount of time, can help you understand what responsibilities you should finish first. If you start off with an assignment that is due in 2 months compared to 2 days, it'll take you forever. Your teachers have chosen the due date thinking that you are able to complete it in that span of time, So for the first step you can do this

  • Bio Lab (11:59 tonight)
  • Algebra HW (7:30 am tomorrow)
  • World Geography Project (8:20 am 2 weeks from now)

After making that list you then need to do Step 2 which is to make a timetable predicting how long it will take for you to finish the homework and manage it in the time that you have in your day. This is a step that you have to be honest with yourself, as you may be cocky and say that you can finish your Bio Lab in around 15 minutes when in reality, you may struggle to understand how to do that lab which takes you more than 2 hours and you don't want that to happen. So make t your prediction carefully and add on to your list, for example

  • Bio Lab (11:59 tonight) (take around 30-45 minutes)
  • Algebra HW (7:30 am tomorrow) (take around 20-30 minutes)
  • World Geography Project (8:20 am 2 weeks from now) (take around 2+ hours)

Conclusion

With all the tips mentioned above, you may have a feeling that this all could be too much of a challenge for you to handle. Yet time management, like any other skill or habit, requires dedication and diligence. It is best not to start abruptly, intensely, and with unrealistic expectations. In fact, expectations are the first stumbling block and the root of all disappointment. Therefore, start by writing a schedule and setting both short and long goals so you may have an insight into where you are going, and then gradually start implementing all other tips. Start thinking less about the ultimate goal, and more about the steps leading to it, and sooner than later you will achieve the desired result within the given deadline.
